What is Evergreen Content?

Evergreen content is social media or blog content that remains relevant and valuable long after its original publish date, continuing to attract engagement and provide value over weeks, months, or even years.

The term comes from evergreen trees, which keep their leaves year-round. In the same way, evergreen content does not wilt after a news cycle ends. A post explaining "5 ways to write better LinkedIn headlines" is evergreen because the advice holds true regardless of when someone reads it. A post about "what happened at today's Apple event" is the opposite -- it is timely but has a short shelf life.

For founders and small brands, evergreen content is particularly valuable because it can be recycled. You can reshare an evergreen post three months later and it still makes sense. This means every piece of evergreen content you create continues generating value long after you wrote it, multiplying the return on your time investment.

Examples of Evergreen Content

Common evergreen formats include how-to guides, frequently asked questions, lessons learned from experience, industry fundamentals, and product use cases. For a SaaS founder, a post explaining "why we built feature X" or "the problem our product solves" is evergreen because the core value proposition does not change week to week. Tips, frameworks, and personal philosophies also tend to be evergreen.

Content that is not evergreen includes news commentary, event recaps, trend reactions, and seasonal promotions. These have their place in a content calendar, but they cannot be reshared later without feeling stale.

Building an Evergreen Strategy

A practical approach is to aim for a 60/40 or 70/30 split between evergreen and timely content. Your evergreen posts form the backbone of your social presence, keeping your accounts consistently active. Timely posts add variety and show you are engaged with what is happening in your industry. When you batch content, focus the majority of your writing time on evergreen posts since they will deliver value for months.
