What is Engagement Rate?

Engagement rate is a social media metric that measures the level of interaction your content receives relative to your audience size, typically calculated as the total number of likes, comments, shares, and clicks divided by impressions or follower count, expressed as a percentage.

Follower count tells you how many people could see your content. Engagement rate tells you how many people actually interact with it. A post that gets 50 likes from an audience of 1,000 followers has a 5% engagement rate, which is excellent. A post that gets 500 likes from 100,000 followers has a 0.5% rate, which is average. Engagement rate normalizes these numbers so you can compare performance across accounts of different sizes.

The formula varies slightly depending on who you ask. The most common versions are: (total engagements / total impressions) x 100, or (total engagements / total followers) x 100. The impressions-based formula is more accurate because it only counts people who actually saw the post. The follower-based formula is easier to calculate since follower counts are always visible.

What Counts as Engagement

Engagement includes any active interaction with your post. On LinkedIn, this means likes, comments, reposts, and clicks. On X, it includes likes, replies, retweets, quote tweets, and link clicks. On Threads, it is likes, replies, and reposts. Each platform weights these actions differently in their algorithms, but for calculating engagement rate, they all count equally.

Passive actions like viewing or scrolling past a post are not engagement -- they are impressions. The distinction matters because high impressions with low engagement means your content is being shown but not resonating. High engagement with lower impressions means your content is compelling but not reaching enough people.

Good Engagement Rates by Platform

Benchmarks vary by platform and industry, but general guidelines for 2026: LinkedIn averages 2-4% engagement rate for personal profiles and 0.5-1% for company pages. X averages 0.5-1.5%. Threads is newer and tends to show higher engagement rates of 3-6% as the algorithm favors discovery. Bluesky engagement rates are highly variable due to the smaller user base but typically run 2-5% for active accounts.
